Mount Ōgi

Mount Ōgi (扇山, Ōgi-yama) is a mountain located in the northern part of Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan, near the city of Ōtsuki. It is part of the Tanzawa Mountains and is known for its relatively easy hiking trails and panoramic views of the surrounding region, including Mount Fuji. The mountain is popular with day-trippers from Tokyo and other nearby areas.

Ōgi-yama’s name, literally translating to "Fan Mountain," is derived from its shape, which resembles a folding fan when viewed from certain angles. The mountain's slopes are covered with a variety of vegetation, including deciduous forests, which provide vibrant colors during the autumn foliage season.

Hiking trails to the summit are well-maintained and generally considered suitable for beginner to intermediate hikers. Several routes exist, offering varying levels of challenge and duration. The trails pass through forested areas and open ridgelines, providing opportunities for viewing local flora and fauna.

The summit of Mount Ōgi offers unobstructed views of Mount Fuji to the south, as well as the surrounding mountain ranges and valleys. On clear days, the cityscape of Tokyo can also be seen in the distance. The mountain is often visited in conjunction with other nearby peaks, creating longer and more challenging hiking itineraries.

Access to Mount Ōgi is primarily via train to Ōtsuki Station, followed by bus or taxi to trailheads located near the base of the mountain. Local bus schedules should be consulted in advance, as service may be limited. The area around the mountain offers limited accommodations and dining options, so visitors are advised to bring their own provisions or utilize the facilities available in Ōtsuki.
