Mongrel (band)

Mongrel was a British alternative hip hop band formed in Sheffield, England in 2008. The group consisted of former Reverend and The Makers frontman Jon McClure, rappers Kid British and Illaman, and members of Arctic Monkeys (bassist Andy Nicholson) and Babyshambles (drummer Adam Ficek). DJ Shadow acted as a producer for their debut album.

The band's music blended elements of hip hop, indie rock, and electronica, characterized by socially conscious lyrics often addressing political and economic issues. Mongrel was known for their energetic live performances and their outspoken views on current affairs.

Mongrel released their debut album, Better Than Heavy, in 2009. The album received mixed to positive reviews, with critics praising its originality and lyrical content, but also noting inconsistencies in its production. Several singles were released from the album, including "Panic Alarm" and "The Menace."

Following the release of Better Than Heavy, Mongrel toured extensively throughout the UK and Europe. However, due to conflicting schedules and creative differences, the band eventually disbanded in 2011. Individual members have since pursued various solo projects and collaborations. Despite their relatively short lifespan, Mongrel is remembered for their unique sound and politically charged message within the British music scene.
