Mitra (crater)

Mitra is a large lunar impact crater that lies on the far side of the Moon. It is located to the southeast of the larger crater Hertzsprung, and northeast of the Mare Orientale basin.

The rim of Mitra is heavily eroded and somewhat irregular, with several smaller craters lying along the edge and within the interior. The most notable of these is Mitra J, a relatively fresh, bowl-shaped crater located on the northeastern inner wall. Other smaller craters also pockmark the interior floor.

The crater's age is estimated to be Nectarian, meaning it formed relatively early in the Moon's history. Due to its location on the far side, Mitra is not visible from Earth.

Mitra is named after Sisir Kumar Mitra, an Indian physicist known for his pioneering work in ionospheric physics and radio communication. The crater was officially named by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) in 1970.
