Mister Roberts (TV series)

Mister Roberts was an American situation comedy television series that aired on NBC from September 17, 1965, to September 2, 1966. It was based on the 1946 novel and 1948 play of the same name by Thomas Heggen, and the subsequent 1955 film adaptation.

The series starred Roger Smith as Lieutenant Douglas Roberts, a cargo officer aboard the USS Reluctant, a United States Navy cargo ship stationed in the Pacific during World War II. The plot revolved around Roberts' constant attempts to be transferred to combat duty, his clashes with the ship's irascible Captain Morton (Richard X. Slattery), and his relationships with the other members of the crew. Other recurring characters included Ensign Frank Pulver (Steve Harmon), Doc (George Ives), and Chief Petty Officer Dowdy (Ray Reese).

The humor of Mister Roberts often stemmed from the contrast between the realities of war and the relative boredom and absurdity of life on a supply ship. The series also explored themes of duty, ambition, and the complexities of military life.

Despite its popularity, Mister Roberts was cancelled after only one season due to declining ratings. The show faced stiff competition from other popular programs airing in the same time slot. Though short-lived, the series remains a recognizable adaptation of the iconic Mister Roberts story.
