Mister Roberts (1984 film)
The 1984 film Mister Roberts is a made-for-television movie adaptation of the 1946 novel and 1948 play of the same name by Thomas Heggen, and a remake of the highly successful 1955 film starring Henry Fonda. This version stars Robert Hays as Lieutenant Douglas Roberts, Charles Durning as Captain Morton, and Kevin Bacon as Ensign Pulver.
The story revolves around the crew of the USS Reluctant, a cargo ship stationed in the backwaters of the Pacific during World War II. Lieutenant Roberts is frustrated by his assignment, longing to see actual combat. He clashes with the tyrannical Captain Morton, whose leadership style is both petty and focused on personal comforts rather than the well-being of his crew. Roberts attempts to transfer to a combat ship, negotiating with the captain in exchange for the crew's good behavior and improved ship performance. Ensign Pulver, the ship's lazy and mischievous cargo officer, provides comic relief but also reflects the crew's general boredom and discontent.
While the 1955 film is widely regarded as a classic, the 1984 made-for-TV adaptation is generally considered less successful. It attempts to capture the same themes of duty, frustration, and the absurdity of war, but often lacks the comedic timing and dramatic impact of its predecessor. The 1984 version has largely been overshadowed by the earlier adaptation and is less frequently discussed or viewed.
