Ministry of Aviation (Nazi Germany)

The Reich Ministry of Aviation (German: Reichsluftfahrtministerium, abbreviated RLM) was a government department during the Nazi era (1933–1945). It was responsible for the development and production of aircraft, management of air transport, and control of the German Luftwaffe.

Established in 1933, initially under the direction of Hermann Göring, the RLM rapidly grew in power and scope, becoming one of the most important government agencies in Nazi Germany. The Ministry oversaw the rapid expansion of the Luftwaffe, a crucial component of the Nazi regime's military buildup and war effort.

The RLM was organized into several departments, responsible for different aspects of aviation. These included departments for aircraft development, aircraft production, air traffic control, and personnel. The Technisches Amt (Technical Office) was particularly influential, responsible for setting technical specifications and overseeing research and development.

Despite its importance, the RLM was plagued by inefficiency and corruption. Göring's lack of technical expertise and his focus on personal enrichment hindered the Ministry's effectiveness. Competing interests within the Ministry and the broader Nazi hierarchy further complicated matters, leading to delays and misallocation of resources. The poor management by the RLM became a significant factor that contributed to Germany's eventual defeat in World War II as it hampered the development of advanced aircraft and hindered the efficient production of existing designs. Karl-Otto Saur eventually gained control over much of aircraft production towards the end of the war, attempting to streamline the process, but it was too late to significantly alter the outcome. Following the end of World War II, the RLM was dissolved.
