Minbar

A Minbar (Arabic: منبر) is a pulpit in a mosque where the Imam (prayer leader) stands to deliver sermons or lectures. It is typically located to the right of the Mihrab (niche indicating the direction of Mecca).

The minbar is an essential feature of a mosque, used primarily during the Friday Jumu'ah prayer and on other special occasions such as Eid prayers. It serves as a platform for the Imam to address the congregation and deliver religious instruction, guidance, and reminders.

Minbars vary in design and construction, reflecting local traditions and available materials. They can range from simple wooden structures to elaborate works of art crafted from stone, marble, or intricately carved wood. Common features include steps leading up to a platform where the Imam stands, and a canopy or dome-like structure covering the platform.

Historically, the minbar symbolized authority and leadership, and its presence within the mosque reinforced the importance of the Imam's role in the community. The minbar's prominence highlights the significance of the sermon (khutbah) as a vital element of Islamic worship and education. The tradition of using a raised platform for delivering sermons dates back to the Prophet Muhammad, who used a raised platform to address his followers.
