Jiri Zidek (paleontologist)

Jiri Zidek (1935-2013) was a Czech-American paleontologist renowned for his extensive research on Paleozoic fishes, particularly sharks and other cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes), and early bony fishes (Osteichthyes). He made significant contributions to understanding the evolution, paleoecology, and biostratigraphy of these ancient fish groups, with a focus on specimens from the Late Paleozoic of North America and Europe.

Zidek's work often involved meticulous examination of fossil teeth, scales, spines, and cranial elements. His research helped to refine taxonomic classifications and to establish evolutionary relationships among different fish lineages. He published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, describing numerous new species and providing detailed anatomical descriptions.

He held positions at institutions such as the University of Oklahoma and the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources, where he conducted much of his research. He was a highly regarded figure in the paleontological community, known for his dedication to the field and his collaborative spirit. His legacy continues through his published works and the collections of fossil fishes he assembled and studied.
