Miguel Marqués (composer)

Miguel Marqués (born August 13, 1843, Barcelona, Spain; died December 29, 1918, Barcelona, Spain) was a Spanish composer, conductor, and violinist. He is best known for his zarzuelas, operettas, and orchestral works.

Marqués studied violin and composition at the Barcelona Conservatory. He began his career as a violinist in various orchestras and theaters. He later became a conductor, leading orchestras in Barcelona and other cities.

Marqués was a prolific composer, writing over 70 zarzuelas and operettas, as well as numerous orchestral works, including symphonies, concertos, and overtures. Some of his most popular works include the zarzuelas El plato del día (1875), El anillo de hierro (1878), and Las campanadas (1880). His music is characterized by its lively melodies, colorful orchestration, and Spanish flavor. He was a prominent figure in the musical life of Barcelona during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is considered one of the leading composers of zarzuela of his time.
