The constituency was created in 1983 from parts of the former Down North and Down South constituencies. It covered the central portion of County Down, including areas such as Ballynahinch, Saintfield, and parts of Downpatrick.

Mid Down was generally considered a marginal constituency, contested between unionist and nationalist parties.
