Meqemale
Meqemale is an ancient settlement located in the Tigray Region of northern Ethiopia. It is situated approximately 35 kilometers southwest of Mekelle, the regional capital. Meqemale is significant for its historical and archaeological importance, containing pre-Axumite and Axumite-era ruins, including monolithic stelae and other structures indicative of a sophisticated, early civilization. The site provides valuable insights into the development of the Axumite Kingdom and its predecessors. While not extensively excavated, Meqemale is recognized by scholars as an important site for understanding the history of the Horn of Africa. The settlement's strategic location likely contributed to its significance in ancient trade routes and political power. Current preservation efforts aim to protect the fragile ruins from environmental damage and human encroachment.
