Meeden

Meeden is a village in the municipality of Veendam, province of Groningen, Netherlands. Situated southwest of Veendam itself, it is located in the Veenkoloniën (peat colonies) region of the province. Historically, Meeden was an independent municipality until it was merged into the municipality of Menterwolde in 1990. In 2018, Menterwolde was dissolved and Meeden became part of the municipality of Veendam.

Meeden is primarily an agricultural community. It is known for its characteristic linear settlement pattern along the former peat canals, a typical feature of the Veenkoloniën. The village includes a church, built in the 18th century, and other local amenities. The surrounding landscape is characterized by vast fields and waterways.

The village's history is intertwined with peat extraction and agriculture that defined the economic activities of the region for centuries. Its population is relatively small, contributing to its rural character.
