Medicine Show (album)
Medicine Show is the second studio album by American rock band The Dream Syndicate, released in 1984. It represented a stylistic shift for the band, moving away from the Velvet Underground-influenced sound of their debut album The Days of Wine and Roses towards a more psychedelic and experimental direction.
The album was produced by Sandy Pearlman, known for his work with Blue Öyster Cult. This collaboration resulted in a denser and more layered sound than their previous recordings. Medicine Show features extended instrumental passages, feedback, and more complex song structures.
While not as commercially successful as their debut, Medicine Show is considered a significant album in The Dream Syndicate's discography and an important contribution to the Paisley Underground movement. It is often cited for its ambitious sound and exploration of new sonic textures. Key tracks include "John Coltrane Stereo Blues," "Still Holding On To You," and the title track. The album's title alludes to the traveling performances of yesteryear, hinting at the band's musical journey and experimentation.
