McNair (crater)
McNair is a lunar impact crater located on the far side of the Moon. It lies within the huge walled plain Apollo, specifically in the portion designated Apollo Basin. To the northwest of McNair is the crater Borman, and to the east-southeast lies Resnik.
McNair is a relatively small, bowl-shaped crater with a sharp, well-defined rim. The interior walls slope down to a relatively flat, unremarkable floor. There is little evidence of significant subsequent impacts or erosion, suggesting that McNair is a relatively young crater, geologically speaking. It lacks a central peak or any prominent features within its interior.
The crater was named in honor of astronaut Ronald McNair, who died in the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986. Many of the craters within the Apollo Basin are named after deceased American astronauts and engineers involved in the early space program. Due to its location on the far side of the Moon, McNair is not visible directly from Earth.
