Martuni District (NKAO)

Martuni District was an administrative division within the Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast (NKAO) of the Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic. It encompassed the southeastern portion of the NKAO. Its administrative center was the town of Martuni (now Khojavend).

The district was populated predominantly by ethnic Armenians. During the First Nagorno-Karabakh War in the early 1990s, control of the district, along with the rest of the NKAO, shifted to Armenian forces. Following the war, the area was administered as part of the self-proclaimed Republic of Artsakh (Nagorno-Karabakh Republic), where it constituted part of the Martuni Province.

Following the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War, Azerbaijan regained control of a significant portion of the Martuni District. The current administrative status of the remaining areas is disputed, with Azerbaijan claiming sovereignty over the entire territory and the Armenian population considering it part of their unrecognized state.
