Mars (band)

Mars was an American no wave band formed in 1975 in New York City. The band consisted of Sumner Crane (guitar, vocals), China Burg (guitar, vocals), Mark Cunningham (bass, vocals), and Nancy Arlen (drums).

Mars was a significant contributor to the burgeoning no wave scene that thrived in downtown New York City during the late 1970s. Their music was characterized by its dissonant and abrasive sound, angular guitar riffs, unconventional song structures, and often cryptic lyrics. They eschewed traditional rock conventions, favoring a more experimental and confrontational approach.

The band released a self-titled EP in 1978, followed by the album 78, compiled from live recordings and studio outtakes, in 1980. Their sound was highly influential on subsequent noise rock and post-punk artists.

Mars disbanded in 1978, though their music continued to circulate and influence musicians for years to come. A compilation album, Live, was released in 1986, further documenting their live performances. Despite their short lifespan, Mars remains a pivotal and influential band in the history of no wave music.
