Monthelie

Monthelie is a village and appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) in the Côte de Beaune subregion of Burgundy, France. It is situated between Volnay and Meursault. The appellation primarily produces red wines from Pinot Noir grapes, though a small amount of white wine is also made from Chardonnay.

Wine Characteristics:

Monthelie red wines are generally characterized as being lighter-bodied than Volnay, with earthy and often rustic aromas and flavors. They typically exhibit notes of red fruit, such as cherry and raspberry, along with hints of spice and undergrowth. With age, the wines can develop more complex aromas of leather and forest floor.

Monthelie white wines, though rare, are similar in style to those of Meursault, exhibiting aromas of citrus, white flowers, and subtle oak.

Appellation Regulations:

The AOC regulations dictate that red Monthelie wines must be made from Pinot Noir. White Monthelie wines must be made from Chardonnay. The regulations also specify maximum yields and minimum alcohol levels.

Production Area:

The Monthelie production area comprises approximately 115 hectares (284 acres) planted with vines. The vineyards are located on gentle slopes, primarily facing east and southeast.

History:

Wine production in Monthelie dates back to the Roman era. The village has historically been closely associated with its more famous neighbors, Volnay and Meursault, and its wines were often sold under those appellations. Monthelie was granted its own AOC in 1937.
