Manihiki (electorate)
The Manihiki electorate is a constituency in the Parliament of the Cook Islands. It consists solely of the island of Manihiki, one of the Northern Cook Islands.
The electorate has traditionally been a stronghold for the Cook Islands Party (CIP), although there have been instances of independent or Democratic Party victories. The representative for Manihiki holds a seat in the 24-member Parliament, advocating for the interests of the island's residents.
Due to the small population of Manihiki, the electorate consistently has one of the smallest numbers of registered voters in the Cook Islands. This can result in close election results and significant impact from individual votes. Issues pertinent to the Manihiki electorate often include pearl farming, inter-island transportation, infrastructure development, and access to essential services like healthcare and education. The remoteness of the island makes these issues particularly significant.
