Giustino (Vivaldi)
Giustino is an opera in three acts by Antonio Vivaldi, to a libretto by Nicolò Beregan (revised by an unknown hand). It was first performed at the Teatro Capranica in Rome during the Carnival season of 1724.
The opera is based on the story of Justin I, a Byzantine emperor of humble origins who rose to power. The libretto recounts Justin's heroic deeds, his love for the princess Leocasta, and his eventual ascension to the throne.
Giustino is a typical example of Venetian opera of the early 18th century, featuring a complex plot, a large cast of characters, and a virtuosic score. Vivaldi's music is notable for its melodic invention, its dramatic intensity, and its skillful orchestration. The opera includes a variety of arias, recitatives, and ensembles, showcasing the vocal talents of the performers. Notable arias include "Vedrò con mio diletto" and "Sento in seno."
The opera experienced a revival in the late 20th and early 21st centuries and is now considered one of Vivaldi's most important operas. Several recordings and stage productions have been made in recent years.
