Mallow (Parliament of Ireland constituency)
Mallow was a parliamentary constituency in Ireland, returning two Members of Parliament (MPs) to the Irish House of Commons from its creation in 1613 until the Act of Union 1800. The constituency was a borough constituency, representing the town of Mallow in County Cork.
History
The borough was created by charter of James I in 1613. The right to vote was vested in the freemen of the borough. As was common with borough constituencies in Ireland at the time, it became a pocket borough controlled by powerful local landowning families, notably the Jephson family.
Following the Acts of Union 1800, which abolished the Parliament of Ireland and created the Parliament of the United Kingdom, Mallow ceased to be a parliamentary constituency. The town was subsequently included in the Cork County constituency for parliamentary representation in Westminster.
