Macleod (provincial electoral district)

Macleod was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada. It existed from 1905 to 2019, electing one Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.

The district was located in southern Alberta, generally covering the area surrounding the town of Fort Macleod. The boundaries of the riding shifted over time, reflecting population changes and electoral boundary redistributions. Over its history, the riding included various communities, often encompassing both urban and rural areas.

Macleod was created in the 1905 Alberta general election, the province's first. Throughout its existence, the riding was represented by MLAs from various political parties, including the Liberal Party, the United Farmers of Alberta, Social Credit, Progressive Conservative, and Wildrose. This indicates that the riding's political leanings were not consistently aligned with any single party over the long term, and voter preferences fluctuated across different eras and political climates in Alberta.

Significant boundary changes were implemented through the years. The riding's size and shape were periodically adjusted to ensure fair representation based on population distribution. Information on specific boundary revisions can be found in official records of Alberta electoral boundary commissions.

In 2017, a review of Alberta's electoral boundaries resulted in significant changes. As a result, the Macleod electoral district was dissolved in the 2019 Alberta general election. The area formerly covered by the Macleod riding was redistributed into the newly created electoral districts of Livingstone-Macleod and Cardston-Siksika. Therefore, Macleod no longer exists as a provincial electoral district in Alberta.
