Ma-ayon
Ma-ayon, also spelled Mayon, refers primarily to a nearly perfect symmetrical stratovolcano located in the Bicol Region of the Philippines, specifically in the province of Albay. It is renowned globally for its iconic conical shape.
Beyond the volcano itself, "Ma-ayon" can also refer to the municipality of Mayon, Albay, within which the volcano is partly situated. The name is derived from the Bicol word "magayon," meaning "beautiful." This reflects the volcano's aesthetic appeal and cultural significance to the local people.
The volcano has a history of eruptions, both explosive and effusive, and its slopes are fertile, supporting agriculture. However, the fertile land also draws populations closer to the danger zone, leading to challenges in disaster risk reduction and management.
The name "Ma-ayon" is also sometimes used metaphorically within the Bicol region to describe something of exceptional beauty or perfection. The volcano plays a significant role in local folklore and mythology.
