Los Kipus

Los Kipus were a popular Peruvian musical group specializing in música criolla, particularly vals criollo (Creole waltz) and boleros. Formed in the late 1950s in Lima, Peru, they gained widespread recognition throughout Latin America in the 1960s and 1970s.

The group’s initial lineup consisted of Genaro Ganoza Torres, Paco Maceda, and Humberto "El Chino" Pejoves. Over the years, various singers contributed to Los Kipus' success, including iconic figures like Eva Ayllón, who had a brief but impactful stint with the group, and later, Pilar Valdéz.

Los Kipus were known for their distinctive sound, characterized by tight vocal harmonies and intricate instrumental arrangements, featuring guitar, cajón, and occasionally other instruments. Their repertoire consisted of both original compositions and interpretations of classic criollo standards. They are recognized for contributing to the popularization and preservation of Peruvian música criolla during a period when other musical genres were gaining prominence.

The group's extensive discography includes numerous albums and singles. Some of their most recognizable hits include "Rosa Elvira," "Nada Soy," "Mal Paso," and "Huye de Mi."

Los Kipus' influence on Peruvian music remains significant, and they are considered one of the most important ensembles in the history of música criolla. Despite lineup changes and periods of inactivity, the name "Los Kipus" has continued to be associated with high-quality interpretations of Peruvian musical traditions.
