Lettow

Lettow was the name of a family of German nobles, most notably associated with Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, a general in the German Army.

Paul Emil von Lettow-Vorbeck (1870-1964) was a German general and colonial officer, renowned for his leadership of the German East Africa campaign during World War I. Despite being significantly outnumbered and cut off from resupply, Lettow-Vorbeck led his troops in a prolonged and successful guerrilla war against British, Belgian, and Portuguese forces. He managed to tie down a large number of Allied troops for the duration of the war and never decisively defeated. His skill in evading capture earned him the nickname "The Lion of Africa." Following World War I, he became a celebrated figure in Germany and later served as a member of the Reichstag. His military strategies are still studied today.
