Layer (film)

In filmmaking and visual effects, a layer refers to a discrete visual element within a composite image. These layers are stacked on top of each other, allowing for individual manipulation and combination to create the final scene. Each layer can contain different aspects of the image, such as live-action footage, computer-generated imagery (CGI), matte paintings, text, graphics, or special effects.

The use of layers allows filmmakers and visual effects artists to work non-destructively. Changes made to one layer do not directly affect the other layers, providing flexibility and control over the final image. This approach simplifies complex tasks like compositing, where multiple elements need to be seamlessly integrated.

Commonly, layers are manipulated using software such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe After Effects, Nuke, and others designed for image editing, compositing, and visual effects. Within these programs, layers can be reordered, masked, transformed (scaled, rotated, positioned), have their opacity adjusted, and be blended using various blending modes (e.g., multiply, screen, overlay) to achieve the desired visual outcome.
