Lan Caihe
Lan Caihe (藍采和) is one of the Eight Immortals in the Taoist pantheon. Lan Caihe is unique amongst the immortals due to their ambiguous gender presentation and eccentric behavior. While often depicted as a young boy or a gender-ambiguous figure, interpretations vary across different artistic and literary portrayals.
Lan Caihe is typically depicted as wandering the streets dressed in tattered blue robes, often with one bare foot. They are known for singing nonsensical songs while begging, often throwing their alms aside or giving them to the poor. Their attributes often include a flower basket or a bamboo tube filled with flowers, a hoe or a shovel, and castanets.
Symbolically, Lan Caihe represents the fleeting nature of life and the rejection of worldly possessions. Their eccentric actions and seemingly foolish songs are interpreted as a form of Taoist enlightenment, demonstrating detachment from societal norms and a focus on spiritual pursuits. Despite their seemingly erratic behavior, Lan Caihe is revered for their connection to the divine and their ability to bring blessings and good fortune. Their unconventional appearance and actions serve as a reminder to look beyond superficial appearances and appreciate the deeper truths of existence.
