Kresnice

Kresnice (plural: Kresnici) are figures from Slovenian folklore, primarily associated with the regions of Inner Carniola and the Karst Plateau. They are believed to be benevolent male sorcerers or shamans who possess the power to transform into white animals, most commonly white horses, oxen, or other domestic animals.

The primary role of the Kresnici is to battle the Škrat, malevolent sorcerers who transform into black animals, typically black bulls or horses. These battles, often fought in the clouds during storms, are believed to ensure good harvests and protect the community from evil influences and natural disasters like hail or drought. The Kresnici are thought to bring light and fertility, opposing the darkness and barrenness brought by the Škrat.

The origin of the Kresnici may be rooted in pre-Christian Slavic beliefs and shamanistic practices. Some scholars connect them to deities or heroes associated with light, fire, and fertility.

The legends surrounding Kresnici often involve specific rituals or objects associated with their power. They are usually said to be born with a special birthmark or other distinguishing characteristic that signifies their abilities. While the belief in Kresnici has diminished in modern times, they remain a significant part of Slovenian folklore and cultural heritage.
