Koktokay

Koktokay is a town and surrounding region in the Altay Prefecture of Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. It's situated in the Fuyun (Burqin) County. The area is known for its rich mineral deposits, particularly beryllium, lithium, and tantalum, and was a significant mining area during the Soviet era and subsequently for China.

Historically, Koktokay played a crucial role in supplying minerals for both the Soviet and Chinese nuclear programs. The "Mine No. 3," located near the town, was particularly important for its beryllium ore. The mining operations significantly contributed to the local economy for many years.

Beyond its industrial history, the Koktokay region is also notable for its scenic landscapes. The Irtysh River (known as the Ertix River in China) flows through the area, creating picturesque valleys and providing water resources for the local population.
