Calum MacDonald (politician)

Calum MacDonald (born 7 May 1956) is a Scottish former Labour Party politician. He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Western Isles (Na h-Eileanan an Iar) from 1987 to 2005.

MacDonald was educated at Inverness Royal Academy and the University of Edinburgh, where he studied Economics. Prior to entering Parliament, he worked as an economist.

During his time in Parliament, MacDonald held several positions including serving on the Scottish Affairs Select Committee. He was a strong advocate for issues relating to the Scottish Highlands and Islands, including crofting, fishing, and Gaelic language preservation. He was considered a moderate within the Labour Party.

MacDonald lost his seat in the 2005 general election to Angus MacNeil of the Scottish National Party. After leaving Parliament, he has been involved in various business ventures and public sector roles. He has maintained an interest in Scottish politics and has contributed to public debate on issues affecting the Highlands and Islands.
