Kiwa (mythology)
Kiwa is a guardian deity in Māori mythology, particularly associated with the ocean. Kiwa is often invoked as a protector of travelers at sea and is sometimes considered a guardian of the land as well. In some traditions, Kiwa is personified as a male deity, while in others, the gender may be less defined.
Kiwa's role is strongly connected to the vastness and power of the ocean. It is through the invocation of Kiwa that safe passage across the sea is sought, and their blessings are believed to ensure a successful voyage. The name "Kiwa" itself is sometimes used as a metaphor for the ocean's expanse.
While not as prominent as some other major Māori deities like Tāne or Tangaroa, Kiwa holds an important position as a specific guardian related to the safety and well-being of those who navigate the seas. Different iwi (tribes) may have variations in their traditions and understanding of Kiwa's specific attributes and responsibilities.
