Kedarnath (mountain)

Kedarnath is a mountain in the Garhwal Himalayan range in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It stands at an elevation of 6,942 meters (22,776 feet). The mountain is part of the Gangotri Group and is situated near the Kedarnath Temple, one of the holiest Hindu shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Kedarnath mountain is a significant peak for mountaineering, though its ascent is considered challenging due to its steep faces and unpredictable weather conditions. The region is characterized by glaciers, including the Chorabari Glacier, which feeds the Mandakini River flowing near the Kedarnath Temple.

Pilgrims visiting the Kedarnath Temple often view the mountain as sacred, adding to its cultural and spiritual significance. Mountaineering expeditions require permits and are typically conducted during the pre-monsoon (May-June) and post-monsoon (September-October) seasons, when weather conditions are relatively more favorable. The area surrounding Kedarnath is also known for its diverse flora and fauna, forming a part of the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary. The mountain and its surroundings suffered significant damage during the 2013 North India floods.
