King's (defunct discount store)

King's was a regional discount department store chain primarily operating in the Northeastern United States. Founded in 1932 as King's Bargain Center in Newton, Massachusetts, it grew to become a significant player in the discount retail market during the mid-20th century. The chain was known for its wide selection of merchandise, including clothing, household goods, electronics, and seasonal items, often sold at competitive prices.

Throughout its history, King's expanded throughout New England and into parts of New York and New Jersey. Its stores typically featured large, warehouse-style layouts, reflecting the discount retail model of the time. The company emphasized value and sought to attract budget-conscious shoppers.

King's experienced financial difficulties in the late 20th century, facing increasing competition from larger national retailers like Walmart and Kmart. Changing consumer preferences and evolving retail trends also contributed to its decline.

The chain eventually filed for bankruptcy and liquidated its assets in the late 1990s, ceasing operations. The King's name and brand are no longer actively used in the retail market. The closure of King's marked the end of an era for many shoppers in the Northeast, who remembered it as a go-to destination for affordable goods. While largely forgotten today, King's played a role in shaping the landscape of discount retailing in its region.
