Jouarre

Jouarre is a commune in the Seine-et-Marne department in the Île-de-France region in north-central France. It is best known for the Jouarre Abbey, a Benedictine abbey founded in the 7th century by Saint Adon.

The abbey, officially known as Abbaye Notre-Dame de Jouarre (Our Lady of Jouarre Abbey), played a significant role in the early history of Christianity in the region. Its crypt contains important Merovingian-era sarcophagi and sculptures, providing valuable insights into the art and religious practices of the period. Notable among these are the sarcophagi of Theodechild and Agilbert, considered masterpieces of early medieval art.
