Mentos
Mentos are a brand of prepackaged confectionery sold in stores and vending machines. They are produced by Perfetti Van Melle, a global confectionery and gum company. Mentos are characterized by their distinctive spherical shape and slightly hard, smooth outer shell covering a soft, chewy interior.
Mentos were first produced in the Netherlands in 1932. Initially, they were flavored with caramel. Over the years, the range of flavors has expanded to include various fruit flavors, mint, and even licorice in some markets.
The candies are typically sold in rolls containing multiple Mentos, or in larger bags containing individually wrapped candies. The iconic roll packaging is easily recognizable and has contributed significantly to the brand's identity.
Mentos have gained notoriety beyond their confectionery properties due to the "Mentos and Diet Coke geyser" phenomenon. This occurs when Mentos are dropped into a bottle of diet cola, causing a rapid release of carbon dioxide and resulting in a dramatic eruption. This effect is primarily attributed to the porous surface of the Mentos providing nucleation sites for the carbon dioxide bubbles to form, combined with the presence of aspartame and potassium benzoate in the diet soda which lower the surface tension.
Mentos are widely available globally and are a popular and recognized confectionery brand, particularly among younger consumers. They are marketed through television commercials and other media, often emphasizing their refreshing and fun qualities.
