John the Good (bishop of Milan)

John the Good (Giovanni Bono in Italian) was the Archbishop of Milan from 641 to 662 AD. He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church.

Very little is known about John's early life or his background. He became Archbishop of Milan in 641, succeeding Asterius. His episcopate occurred during a turbulent period in Italian history, marked by Lombard invasions and political instability.

John is credited with overseeing the rebuilding and restoration of several churches in Milan that had been damaged or destroyed during these conflicts. He is also remembered for his charitable works and his dedication to the poor and needy within his diocese, earning him the epithet "the Good."

The Historia Langobardorum of Paul the Deacon mentions John as a virtuous and pious leader. He is said to have maintained a close relationship with the Lombard kings, which helped to protect the city of Milan from further devastation.

John the Good died in 662 and was buried in the Basilica of San Simpliciano in Milan. His feast day is celebrated on February 12th. He is remembered as a figure of stability and compassion during a difficult era in Milanese history.
