John Parker (Canadian politician)

John Parker (1906-1978) was a Canadian politician who served as the second Commissioner of the Northwest Territories (NWT) from 1967 to 1979.

Prior to his appointment as Commissioner, Parker had a long and distinguished career in the Canadian civil service, particularly in the administration of the North. He held various positions within the federal government dealing with northern affairs.

As Commissioner, Parker presided over a period of significant change and development in the NWT. This era saw increased self-government for the territory's residents, advancements in resource development, and a growing awareness of Indigenous rights and concerns. He played a key role in the establishment of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories and the increasing transfer of power from the federal government to the territorial government. He worked to improve education, healthcare, and infrastructure throughout the vast territory.

Parker’s time as Commissioner is remembered for his commitment to the people of the NWT and his efforts to build a more equitable and prosperous future for the territory. He retired from the position in 1979.
