John McKenzie (New Zealand politician)

John McKenzie (c. 1839 – 6 August 1901) was a New Zealand politician and farmer. He served as Minister of Lands, Minister of Agriculture, and Minister of Immigration in the Liberal Government under Premier Richard Seddon from 1891 until his death. He is considered one of the most influential figures in the Liberal Government's land reform policies.

Early Life and Farming:

Born in Ross-shire, Scotland, McKenzie immigrated to New Zealand in 1860. He initially worked as a farm labourer before eventually acquiring his own farming land in Otago. He was a strong advocate for small farmers and land reform.

Political Career:

McKenzie entered Parliament in 1881, representing Moeraki. He was a strong supporter of the Liberal Party and quickly rose to prominence within their ranks. In 1891, when the Liberal Government came to power under John Ballance (later Richard Seddon), McKenzie was appointed Minister of Lands. This appointment was crucial given the Liberal Party's focus on land reform.

Minister of Lands and Land Reform:

As Minister of Lands, McKenzie played a pivotal role in implementing the Liberal Government's land reforms. These reforms aimed to break up large estates (particularly those held by absentee landlords) and make land more accessible to smaller farmers. He championed the leasehold system, where farmers could lease land from the Crown rather than owning it outright, making it easier for those with limited capital to access farmland. The Lands for Settlement Act 1892 was a key piece of legislation passed under his leadership, enabling the government to purchase large estates for subdivision and settlement. He faced significant opposition from wealthy landowners and conservative elements, but his policies were largely successful in promoting closer settlement and a more equitable distribution of land.

In addition to Minister of Lands, McKenzie also served as Minister of Agriculture and Minister of Immigration. As Minister of Agriculture, he worked to improve farming practices and promote agricultural exports. As Minister of Immigration, he oversaw policies aimed at attracting desirable immigrants to New Zealand.

McKenzie is remembered as a key figure in the Liberal Government and a champion of land reform.
