Hurricane Hernan (1996)

Hurricane Hernan was a powerful Category 5 hurricane that occurred in the Eastern Pacific Ocean during August 1996. Part of the 1996 Pacific hurricane season, Hernan was one of the strongest hurricanes on record in the Eastern Pacific.

Meteorological History:

Hernan originated from a tropical wave that moved off the coast of Africa in late July. The wave traversed the Atlantic Ocean and eventually entered the Eastern Pacific basin. On August 13, the disturbance organized into Tropical Depression Eight-E several hundred miles south of Mexico. The depression quickly strengthened into Tropical Storm Hernan later that day. Under favorable conditions, Hernan rapidly intensified. On August 14, it became a hurricane, and within 24 hours, it had reached Category 4 status. Continuing its rapid intensification, Hernan peaked as a Category 5 hurricane on August 16, with sustained winds of 160 mph (260 km/h) and a minimum central pressure of 932 mbar.

After reaching its peak intensity, Hernan began to weaken as it moved over slightly cooler waters and encountered increased wind shear. The hurricane gradually diminished in strength, dropping below major hurricane status on August 17. Hernan continued to weaken as it tracked westward, eventually dissipating over the open Pacific Ocean on August 21.

Impact:

Hurricane Hernan remained far offshore throughout its existence and did not directly impact any landmasses. There were no reports of damage or casualties associated with the storm. While it did not make landfall, the hurricane generated large swells that affected coastal areas of southwestern Mexico, resulting in minor coastal flooding and rip currents.

Records and Significance:

Hurricane Hernan was one of the strongest hurricanes recorded in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. Its intensity and rapid intensification were notable features of the storm. Due to its lack of direct impact, the name Hernan was not retired and was used again in subsequent Pacific hurricane seasons.
