Lagurka

Lagurka is a village located in the Mestia Municipality of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region in northwestern Georgia. Situated in the Greater Caucasus mountains, it is part of the historical and cultural region of Svaneti, known for its unique traditions, architecture, and distinctive Svan language. Lagurka is recognized for its medieval defensive towers, a hallmark of Svanetian villages, which served as residences and fortifications for individual families. These towers, often built of stone and mortar, are vital to Svaneti’s designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The village, like many others in Upper Svaneti, experiences a relatively isolated existence, particularly during winter months due to heavy snowfall and limited accessibility. Economically, the community relies primarily on agriculture, livestock farming, and increasingly, tourism, which is drawn to the region's scenic beauty and historical significance.
