Jack O'Connell (American politician)

Jack O'Connell (born October 8, 1951) is an American politician from California. He served as the California State Superintendent of Public Instruction from 2003 to 2011.

O'Connell began his political career in the California State Assembly, representing the 35th district from 1982 to 1994. He then served in the California State Senate, representing the 18th district from 1994 to 2002.

As State Superintendent of Public Instruction, O'Connell was responsible for overseeing the California Department of Education and the state's public school system, from kindergarten through 12th grade. His tenure focused on improving student achievement, closing the achievement gap, and promoting college and career readiness.
