John Logan (writer)

John Logan (born September 24, 1961) is an American playwright, screenwriter, television writer, and film producer. He is known for his work across multiple media, crafting compelling narratives often exploring complex characters and themes.

Logan began his career as a playwright, achieving early success with plays like Never the Sinner, which examined the Leopold and Loeb case. He transitioned into screenwriting, quickly establishing himself with acclaimed films such as Any Given Sunday, Gladiator (for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay), The Aviator, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

His subsequent screenwriting credits include Hugo, Skyfall (for which he received a BAFTA Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay), and Spectre. Logan also created and wrote the Showtime horror drama series Penny Dreadful, which garnered critical acclaim for its gothic atmosphere, rich characters, and exploration of literary monsters. He continued the Penny Dreadful universe with the spin-off series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels.
