John Dundas (RAF officer)

John Dundas (19 September 1915 – 30 November 1940) was a British Royal Air Force (RAF) fighter pilot and flying ace during the Battle of Britain.

Dundas joined the RAF in 1938 and was assigned to No. 609 Squadron, flying Spitfires. He quickly distinguished himself as a skilled and aggressive pilot. During the Battle of Britain in the summer of 1940, Dundas achieved a remarkable number of aerial victories, becoming one of the highest-scoring aces of the battle. He was credited with at least 12 confirmed kills, along with several probables and damaged enemy aircraft.

He was known for his exceptional eyesight and quick reactions in combat. His bravery and leadership qualities earned him the respect of his fellow pilots.

Dundas was killed in action on 30 November 1940 during a dogfight with German Messerschmitt Bf 109s over the English Channel. It is believed that he was shot down by Helmut Wick, the leading German ace at the time, though Wick himself was also shot down and killed in the same engagement, and the identity of the victor of their encounter remains a point of historical debate.

John Dundas was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for his gallantry and achievements during the Battle of Britain. His legacy as a courageous and highly effective fighter pilot remains an important part of RAF history.
