George Baines (architect d.1934)

George Baines (1852-1934) was a British architect known for his work designing chapels and schools, particularly for the Wesleyan Methodist Church.

Baines was born in Bolton, Lancashire, and trained as an architect. He established a successful practice specializing in nonconformist architecture. A significant portion of his career was devoted to designing and overseeing the construction of Wesleyan Methodist chapels throughout the United Kingdom. His designs typically featured Gothic Revival elements, adapted to the specific needs and budget of each congregation.

In addition to chapels, Baines also designed numerous schools and other educational buildings. His work in this area often incorporated innovative features and layouts to enhance the learning environment.

Baines's son, Cuthbert Baines, followed in his father's footsteps and also became an architect. The firm, initially George Baines, later became George Baines & Son, reflecting the collaboration between father and son. Some projects are jointly attributed to both architects, making it difficult to always definitively separate their individual contributions, particularly in later works.

His architectural legacy is found primarily in the numerous religious and educational structures he designed, many of which still stand today. He died in 1934.
