John Cameron (Reformed Presbyterian)
John Cameron (1773-1844) was a prominent Reformed Presbyterian minister and theologian in Scotland. He served as the Professor of Divinity in the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Scotland from 1817 until his death.
Born in Perthshire, Scotland, Cameron received his early education locally before attending the University of Edinburgh. He was licensed to preach by the Reformed Presbytery in 1798 and ordained as minister of the church in Whitburn in 1799.
Cameron was a staunch defender of the Covenanted Reformation and the distinctive principles of the Reformed Presbyterian Church, including its adherence to the National Covenant and Solemn League and Covenant, its refusal to incorporate with the state, and its emphasis on the Crown Rights of Christ. His theological works are characterized by a rigorous application of Scripture to all areas of life and thought.
His principal writings include: The Extent and Perpetuity of the Abrahamic Covenant, a defense of infant baptism, and various sermons and pamphlets dealing with issues of the day from a Reformed Presbyterian perspective. His teachings and writings significantly influenced the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Scotland and abroad, particularly in North America. He is remembered for his intellectual acumen, unwavering commitment to biblical truth, and profound piety. His students included many future leaders of the Reformed Presbyterian denomination.
