Joe Rohde

Joe Rohde (born October 6, 1955) is a retired Imagineer, best known for his work at Walt Disney Imagineering. He is celebrated for his distinctive personal style, often characterized by elaborate jewelry, ear piercings, and a robust beard.

Rohde began his career with Disney in 1980 as a model designer for Epcot's second phase. He is most recognized for his leadership role in designing and developing Disney's Animal Kingdom, which opened in 1998. Rohde served as the Executive Designer and Vice President for Creative for that project. His vision for Animal Kingdom was focused on authentic representations of wildlife, conservation efforts, and immersive storytelling.

Beyond Animal Kingdom, Rohde contributed to several other notable Disney projects, including the Expedition Everest roller coaster at Animal Kingdom, the reimagining of the Tower of Terror attraction at Disney California Adventure (Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: Breakout!), and Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Hawai'i.

Rohde retired from Walt Disney Imagineering in January 2021 after a 40-year career. He continues to be a respected figure in the themed entertainment industry and a source of inspiration for aspiring designers and Imagineers. His philosophy emphasizes cultural sensitivity, environmental awareness, and creating deeply immersive experiences for guests.
