Jean Coutu (pharmacist)

Jean Coutu is a Canadian pharmacist and businessman, best known as the founder of the Jean Coutu Group (Groupe Jean Coutu), a large pharmacy chain based in Quebec.

Born in Montreal, Quebec, Coutu began his career as a pharmacist after graduating from the Université de Montréal. Frustrated with the limitations he perceived in existing pharmacy models, he sought to create a pharmacy that offered a wider range of services and products, focused on customer experience, and operated on a more accessible pricing model.

In 1969, he opened his first pharmacy, which quickly gained popularity. This marked the beginning of the Jean Coutu Group, which expanded rapidly through franchising and acquisitions. The chain distinguished itself by its longer operating hours, wider selection of merchandise beyond pharmaceuticals, and a strong focus on customer service.

Coutu's entrepreneurial vision and marketing strategies contributed significantly to the success of his company. He eventually stepped down from day-to-day management but remained involved with the company in various capacities. In 2018, the Jean Coutu Group was acquired by Metro Inc., a Canadian food retailer. Despite the acquisition, the Jean Coutu name has been retained and the pharmacies continue to operate under that brand.

Coutu has been recognized for his business acumen and contributions to the Quebec economy. He is considered a significant figure in the development of the modern pharmacy landscape in Canada.
