Javier Muñoz (actor)
Javier Muñoz (born July 15, 1975) is an American actor, singer, and activist, best known for his performances in the Broadway musical Hamilton, where he took over the roles of Alexander Hamilton and originated the role of Usnavi in In the Heights before Hamilton's creation.
Muñoz was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from New York University with a degree in political science. His early career included roles in regional theater and off-Broadway productions.
Muñoz first gained recognition for his role as Usnavi in the Off-Broadway and Broadway productions of In the Heights. He then went on to originate the role of the Alternate Alexander Hamilton in the Broadway production of Hamilton, eventually becoming the principal actor in the role after Lin-Manuel Miranda's departure. He played Hamilton for over two years and earned critical acclaim for his portrayal.
Beyond his stage work, Muñoz is a vocal advocate for HIV/AIDS awareness and LGBTQ+ rights. He has been open about his own HIV-positive status and uses his platform to educate and inspire others. He has worked with organizations like Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and GLAAD.
