James Speed (Australian politician)

James Speed (born 1868, died 1940) was an Australian politician who served as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1920 to 1927, representing the electorate of Hawkesbury. He was a member of the Progressive Party, later known as the Country Party.

Speed was born in the Hawkesbury district of New South Wales. Prior to entering politics, he was a farmer and grazier in the region. He actively participated in local agricultural societies and community affairs.

His political career began with his election to the Hawkesbury seat in the 1920 state election, following the introduction of proportional representation. He was re-elected in 1922 and 1925. During his time in Parliament, Speed advocated for the interests of rural communities, focusing on issues related to agriculture, infrastructure development, and improved services for residents in the Hawkesbury area. He lost his seat in the 1927 election.

After leaving parliament, Speed returned to his farming interests in the Hawkesbury. He remained active in local community organisations until his death in 1940.
