Esopus (magazine)
Esopus was a biannual arts and culture magazine founded in 2003 and published by Tod Lippy. The magazine was notable for its distinctive, visually-oriented content, focus on the creative process, and inclusion of facsimile reproductions of artists' ephemera and original works.
Esopus typically featured artist portfolios, interviews, and critical essays exploring various aspects of creativity. Each issue included a CD of original music commissioned specifically for the magazine. A signature element of Esopus was its "Found" section, which showcased intriguing found objects and documents with accompanying stories.
The magazine's name, Esopus, refers to the ancient Greek fabulist Aesop (also spelled Esopus), reflecting the magazine's interest in storytelling and moral narratives, though in a contemporary and often unconventional manner.
Publication of Esopus ceased with issue number 26 in Fall 2019. Back issues remain highly sought after by collectors and those interested in contemporary art and design.
