James Haughton (police officer)

James Haughton (born c. 1965 - died October 29, 2003) was a police officer with the Milwaukee Police Department in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He is best known for having been shot and killed in the line of duty while attempting to arrest a suspect.

Haughton served with the Milwaukee Police Department for 14 years. On October 29, 2003, he responded to a domestic disturbance call on Milwaukee's north side. During the attempt to arrest a suspect, the suspect, Daniel Stehling, opened fire with a handgun, fatally wounding Haughton. Stehling was later apprehended and convicted of first-degree intentional homicide.

Officer Haughton's death prompted widespread grief and a large outpouring of support for his family and the Milwaukee Police Department. He was survived by his wife and two children. Several memorials were established in his honor, including the naming of a street in Milwaukee after him. Haughton is remembered for his dedication to his community and his bravery in the face of danger. His death highlighted the risks faced by law enforcement officers every day.
